Great idea! That would be a lot of icons, though! Interesting question whether we would make separate icons for black and white pieces, or we just rely on fill variation. Probably separate, though.
Yes, every piece would probably be a lot.
I think few generic ones (e.g. chess board or some of the most recognizable ones - probably the knight/rook) would be a good start!
But, of course, all the pieces are interesting, too.
Well, that leads to questions about the use case(s) for the icons. What is/are the purposes? Just to broadly represent chess? To be able to use in a full representation of the game, whether for narrative or even an interface to play?
The goal I had in mind is to broadly represent chess, yes.
But you're right, I think some fonts' chess pieces are just used in some applications that implement the game of chess, which is also useful (but I'd argue less so).
With the growing online chess popularity, it makes sense to add chess icons to the set.
