[BUG] Google VPN BREAKING Windows 11 DNS assignment settings. #36

Closed Mr-McMuffin closed 2 weeks ago

Mr-McMuffin commented 7 months ago

This VPN BREAKS DNS functionality in windows 11, it locks the system DNS to google DNS servers under the network settings.

1) Settings -> Network & Internet -> Ethernet Leave this open, and set on Automatic DHCP. 2) Connect to Google VPN, it will change your DNS setting to manual google DNS servers. 3) Disconnect, and keep an eye on the settings window we left opened, it will stay stuck to the google DNS settings, not the automatic DHCP, breaking ANY dns functionality of your computer.

Even after a restart, closing the google VPN app, or disconnecting the DNS settings are stuck on a manual assignment. This is unacceptable. In order to use the google one vpn, one needs to manually go into network settings and toggle back on the auto assignment.

This is a serious issue, it happens on all windows 11 computers ive tested. MAJOR ISSUE. Please address when an ETA to fix this will be done.

Why is this a huge issue? If you use TLS or Encrypted DNS the google 8.8.8.8 will break this configuration. I use encrypted dns with ECH, with google none of this is available putting my security at risk when the vpn is off. If you have custom dns for work, firewalls, or family safety/filtering - again the vpn will break it. This was causing a huge headache for me but i discovered the google VPN has a huge bug with not reseting DNS back into the state it was before turning on.

Best solution is to go into network settings on windows 11 and set it back to what you used on the IPV4/V6 previously. Note this doesnt do this on mac, only windows.

I just got an email from Google, stating that later in the year, they will discontinue Google One VPN.

One more grave in the Google tools cemetery 🤔

You cannot trust Google any more, and you cannot rely on Google tools any more. If they can't make money out of it, they will eventually ditch it.

I still remember how mad I was when they discontinued Picasa. I liked that very much and used it a lot.

In the meantime I have uninstalled Google VPN. Now, when I e.g. want to watch some Austrian TV show which is geoblocked from Germany, I just use Cyber Ghost VPN with an Austrian server. That works quite nicely. I also keep hearing good things about NordVPN. So there are some alternatives.

It's a paid service as part of a bundle. This should allow an immediate full refund.

We apologize for the delay in responding and appreciate your feedback so far.

We have decided to discontinue VPN by Google One starting in June, as we refocus our efforts on supporting the more in-demand features and benefits.

I am utterly disappointed and frustrated with your recent decision to discontinue the VPN service, but only for non-Pixel owners. This move is not discontinuation; it's discrimination against your own customer base. It's appalling to see that you still offer the service but have closed it off to a significant portion of your users simply because they don't use a Pixel device. This decision is ludicrous, and frankly, it's laughable.

The VPN service, despite its flaws, was a good product. However, your decision to bury it within the Google One app, lack selectable locations, and have broken DNS on Windows were significant drawbacks. It's a shame that such a promising service was hindered by poor UX design and functionality choices - instead of replacing or fixing correctable mistakes you abandon a product; Im pretty sure i know why, its profitability reasons.

I have decided to cancel all Google services as a result of this and many unjust actions before it. Proton will now replace all the services I used to rely on from Google. Price is not a concern for me; what matters is a company that stands by its products and treats all its customers fairly. Google has failed on both fronts - MANY times before this aswell. From Google Domains to now the VPN service, it's clear that your company's leadership is driving it into the ground with its customer base. -- In 2023 google has closed so many services up i cannot even count this was likely planned in 2023 which would explain why it was completely abanoned development wise.

For those looking for alternatives, Cloudflare Warp offers a similar service for free, albeit slightly slower. There's even a Reddit thread discussing its advantages, including its non-logging policy.

I urge Google to reconsider its decisions and start prioritizing its customers' needs and expectations. However you've already lost me as a customer and all of my clients as I will be spending the next week migrating everyone - after google domains and the vpn, i have zero trust google can keep any of its core services alive.

Thank you for your feedback on the libraries for VPN by Google One. Due to the planned turndown of the VPN, this repo will soon be archived. I’m marking this issue as closed. Thank you again for your input.
