Bring back black and white emoji to this repo? #390

It's great that the black and white set got some love:

https://developers.googleblog.com/2022/04/what-is-black-and-white-and-read-all.html

Will the source SVGs come back to this repo, or will there be another repo?

The font was removed with #388 last month.

The variable font is built a bit differently than the legacy monochrome font. I'm not quite sure what the right path is here, will try to find out.

Any update? It seems from searching Github that the sources for Noto Emoji are still not available anywhere.

Also the variable font is missing presets for Medium and SemiBold.

For what it's worth: sources for the much older edition of the black and white font have been available at another repo since 2016: https://github.com/googlefonts/noto-source/tree/main/src/NotoEmoji.

Though they were apparently converted to UFO format from whatever the originals were (according to the commit message that introduced those files). I don't recall the sources for that ever being posted in this repository before. Just the fully-built font file.

(I only know this because I contributed a small change to the files over there some years ago now.)

@rsheeter Any updates?

I have noticed that there is a repo googlefonts/emoji-bw mentioned in this file, but it seems to be a private one.

The black and white version of this font looks quite nice! It would be great if the assets used to build it were available, in any form (I'd be very happy with just a dumped-out archive from the last stable release). Right now the best black and white emoji source I have that provides access to the raw assets is OpenMoji, and... well... let's just say Noto Emoji is a very visually-appealing set of images.

Another thing I find troubling is that Noto Emoji claims to be an open source font on fonts.google.com:

Noto Emoji is an open source font that has you covered for all your emoji needs, including support for the latest Unicode emoji specification. It has multiple weights and features thousands of emoji.

Either the description needs to be updated or the source added somewhere, but currently this is highly misleading in my opinion…
