WAN Disconnects #23

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Configure router 
2. Use router for some time (30 - 40 minutes)
3. Start clicking on links and notice that the internet is no longer working.
4. Wait 20-30 seconds and internet connection is reestablished.
5. Every few minutes go back to step 3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The expected output is a wan port that stays connected to the internet. 

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Both the official firmware and p4, p5, and p6 versions exhibit the same 
behavior.

Please provide any additional information below.
Attached is a syslog file showing the disconnects.

How do you connect to the internet? (I mean physically)
The first thing I think you should check is the cable.
As for me, I don't have link at all if I plug my cable directly to RT-N56U.
Asus says there is no any problem with ports. 
I checked cable with my ISP, it seems to be fine. There are several such 
problems were discussed on forums. 
I've found a simple solution on the  next day I've bought it. I've taken my 
old, but stable DIR300 switched off DHCP server and other software it it and 
connected RT-N56U via switch (DIR300). It works fine, but I'm very disappointed 
that ASUS can't acknowledge this hardware fault. =/

Same thing here:

and so on, like 10 times per day. Using Thomson TCM420 cable modem. Had to 
resort to using another cheap wired router and connect RT-N56U to it and only 
use RT-N56U as Wireless AP. Works flawlessly now.

Same thing for me to.

Im connected to a adsl modem with fixed ip, but i still gets these 
disconnect´s.
Asus are aware of the problem but i think they ignore it, maybe they now that 
its not fixable (hardware fault).

I had this problem for months.  Shelved the router since it just became too 
frustrating to have to reboot the router every day or so.  Tried and earlier 
version of the custom firmware and still got WAN disconnects.  But now with 
RT-N56U_1.0.1.7f-p9 firmware problem fixed!  Running for a week with no WAN 
disconnects.

Using the latest 1.0.1.7f-p10_4 for 5 days now without WAN disconnects!
I am curious what other people's experiences are with this version?

The log showed 1 WAN disconnect in the 24h i was testing the router but the 
logs from software (IRC, chat clients etc) showed multiple disconnects, each 
couple of hours.

Ok thanks for the comments.
After some weeks of testing now the router has lost the WAN connection 2 times 
within 48h (version_p11):

Hello,

i am having the same issue. First two months with the router were perfect but 
now i am getting this WAN disconnect very very often!! Like every 15 minutes or 
so. I installed the RT-N56U_1.0.1.8d-p3 firmware by Padavan and i still have 
the issue.

Any idea what is the cause of the issue? It seems that ASUS is aware but is not 
fixing this! Very frustrating.

Also have this issue with ISP Vympelcom (Beeline). As far I can gather the 
higher the load on router - the more frequent is the "modem hangup" issue. 
Here's a bit of log:

Small update - seems like this issue occurs when download speed is more than 50 
mbit\s Does not seem to occur on lower speed or at least occurs very rarely.

I have the same problem. Because of constant WAN disconnects none of my iTunes 
home sharing computers can stream to Apple TV.

I have the same problem with Asus connected to Thomson cable modem (Internet 
speed 50MB/s). I changed configuration from router to access point and now its 
much better (but still disconnects).

This is a serious problem and switching to AP mode doesn't solve it. The ASUS 
forum is full of it:

Any news on that problem? I'm facing the same issue (looses WAN lease every 
10-20 hours with a brand new router just bought). Pretty unusable like this :(

You can check the picture i posted in comment 6, that's how it happens every 
time.
Tested every single ASUS and Padawan firmware, happens with all of them. Only 
happens in router mode though and when connected directly to modem, if used as 
an AP the N56U works great (modem->cheapass 20$ router->N56U) with no 
disconnects.

of years ago... I can't say exactly (it's the very short peace of information), 
but it seems that the end of session period was reached...

It was removed in custom builds only. I hate this stupid page, which redirects

2 LooKMaNe: it seems you have problems with WAN port. I wrote earlier that I 
couldn't  establish direct connection at all (no link) until b1 8e-p2 firmware. 
The first thing you may try is to place some device (maybe some old router) 
between your ISP and router. (but switch off dhcp functions on that device).
The second thing is to all of you guys - please do remove 
/etc/storage/start_script.sh after flashing and reboot the device. It is 
important to do!
(go to http://my.router/Main_AdmStatus_Content.asp and type
rm -f /etc/storage/start_script.sh )
The third thing - set your wan link to 10Mbit/s and try to see if there are any 
changes...

Had the same problem. For me it was fixed by your third point: WAN connection 
seems stable since setting the wan link to 10Mbit.

I have the same problem on UPC 120Mbit internet connection. WAN disconection 
appears randomly every few months and last for several days.

I learned temporary hack to allow me to connect internet at least for several 
hours, when this problem occurs.

Try to follow this steps:
 - turn off the modem of you internet provider for several minutes
 - turn back on and wait until it connects (watch the leds)
 - in router's Quick Connection Wizard try to connect WAN (i use different DNS than my providers, but that's optional)
 - when connected, immediately play internet raDio or internet TV, so there is continuous data stream. If the connection will not idle, it should not disconnect WAN. Hope it helps at least someone.

An Asus rt-n56u owner from the UK believes he found a solution (see below). Is 
it possible to disable the EzQOS entirely? The disconnect issue has been very 
annoying, especially when you have non-techie people living at home who 
complain while you're at work.

"I dumped the dlink 615 for the Asus RT n56u but found the connection dropping 
out and reconnecting straight away and nobody could find a fix ...Until now, 
the problem was the EzQoS Bandwidth Management, it needed to be set that there 
was bandwidth allocated to the Internet. I think when there was any traffic on 
my home network and the net was at rest all the bandwidth was used for that so 
the Internet connection was lost to the modem .....what a difference all the 
PC's in the house are flying.

I hope this post is some help to anyone who has a similar fault as I couldn't 
find any on the net about the this setting

EZQoS is the source of the problem! I too had this problem, and found that when 
I enabled my streaming software the WAN would loose it's lease. I thought for a 
long time something was wrong with the software, but then I remembered I had 
enabled EZQoS not too long ago. Disabling it gave me my WAN back even while 
streaming no more dropping the lease. No EZQoS!

If you enable EZQoS do not forget to turn off Hardware_NAT. These two things 
can't work together

You guys are right - EzQOS was removed, at least on the newest Padawan firmware 
that I'm using (Version 1.1.1.8f-b8-2) now. No disconnects so far but I haven't 
had the time to push the router to its limits either.

FYI - if I remember correctly, I was on 1.0.1.8e-p2 firmware when these WAN 
disconnects were happening. I DO remember that I was simultaneously downloading 
 a few super large files (game installs from Steam) on a PC that was connected 
via Cat5e. Again, I recall reading that the firmware used doesn't matter with 
these WAN disconnects.

ONE difference is that I have Hardware NAT as "Offload IPv4/PPPoE for 
LAN/Wi-Fi" (instead of the LAN only). Don't know if that makes a 
difference......or why I should have it set to LAN only.

ALSO, for Software NAT, what does the "Default NAT" setting actually refer to? 
Why would someone choose/not choose "Fast NAT Path" instead?

OK, so it happened to me again! I was downloading a bunch of stuff from Steam 
around 2:30am. Woke up to a dead WAN. Below are the log files that I was able 
to retrieve. They are slightly different than the logs being shown above by 
other users with the WAN disconnect issue.

(!) The only correlation that I can think of is that my PC is set to Sleep Mode 
within 30 minutes of user inactivity (stupid Windows 7 can't detect that I'm 
downloading stuff from Steam). My PC goes to Sleep all of the time, but the 
disconnect only happens when I'm downloading large files.

Jun 17 03:03:39 detect_wan: No response from gateway (67.83.112.1)! Perform 
DHCP renew...
Jun 17 03:03:57 RT-N56U: wan down (eth3)
Jun 17 03:03:57 dhcp client: deconfig: lease is lost

A Router reboot didn't fix it. Unplugging and replugging in the Cat5e on the 
WAN port didn't fix it.

To fix it this time, I went into the router's admin page. The Doctor on the top 
right hand corner recommended that I go through the WAN Connection Diagnosis 
page. The process required me to unplug the power from the Cable Modem. Once I 
did that, everything started working again.

Thoughts? Maybe my Cable Modem is the culprit? It's always worked fine in the 
past...issue has only reared its ugly head recently with this new router + new 
PC combination.

For what it's worth, I have a Scientific Atlanta Webstar DPC2100. Cablevision 
(my provider) won't allow me to look at logs, unfortunately.

I've been running into this problem during large file transfers.  I'm currently 
running 1.1.1.8f-b8-2.  I've tried turning off all NAT, pinning the WAN port to 
10Mb Full, turning off flow control, just about anything and everything.  I can 
reproduce the problem consistently by attempting to download very large files 
2GB or more.  I really like the router, but this issue makes me want to return 
it!

Hey all,

I think I was able to sort out the WAN Disconnect issue by installing the new 
Beta Firmware from Asus (Version 3.0.0.3_135). 

I pushed the router by simultaneously downloading multiple computer games from 
Steam (all were multiple GB's) overnight. I woke up the next morning and 
everything downloaded properly. The log did not show any disconnects or 
reboots. I have yet to experience any router crashes during the last few days 
either.

The beta firmware introduces a new GUI and it is in English. Since it's a Beta, 
I don't know if it will introduce any new problems so be mindful of that.

Also, I just got back from a 2-week vacation, so I haven't had time to 
double-check if this Asus Beta was used as the foundation in Andy's "NewGUI" 
firmware which was released recently. I'd assume that if it was, I'd choose 
Andy's "NewGUI" version over the Asus version anyday. :)

Followed James' suggestion and installed the RT-N56U_3.0.0.3_135.trx beta 
firmware as well. So far so good!

Padavan's 'NEW GUI' version doesn't seem to be based off of this one, since 
this new GUI from the beta firmware is actually quite different.

Anyhow, hoping to see an official release soon! I can't stand the WAN 
disconnecting so much any longer...

I can confirm that the new firmware is working for me and I was getting lease 
lost pretty regularly if I tried running any real traffic through it.

I'm not 100% if the solution is that:
1. The new firmware from asus is less buggy 
2. The new firmware comes with QoS disabled by default.

I know some other people mentioned that turning QoS off fixed their problems.  
I just didn't know how to turn QoS off in the old stock firmware.  (And hadn't 
installed Padavan's)

Sorry for using the Padavan bug tracker to talk about stock firmware issues, 
but this is the best google hit for this problem.

Glad to hear that the beta firmware is working for everyone! I know that after 
reading all of the rave reviews online, I was ready to throw the router out the 
window.

JHuffa - I don't believe QoS (or at least "EzQoS") was the core problem since 
Padavan had originally removed it in some of his firmware builds, and yet, the 
problem remained. I also recall manually disabling EzQoS through the firmware 
builds that still contained the feature (in both Padavan's and Asus Stock) with 
no success.

To be quite honest, I'm not sure what exactly fixed the WAN Disconnect issue 
within this beta firmware. It's a shame that it took over a year for Asus to 
finally fix it, and unfortunate for them that many affected users still do not 
know about the beta firmware fix (and/or are leary about installing a beta 
firmware).

Andrew - 

1. Do you have a constant stream of data that is always downloading (e.g. a 
Torrent that runs for 24+ hours)? 
2. Can you share a snippet of your Router's log to see what the error message 
is? I am curious if it's the same "WAN has been disconnected" error message. 
3. Is the Router re-establishing the DNS after the Disconnect? 

Under the old firmware, the DHCP was completely lost and required power cycling 
to get the DNS re-established. Also, this might show the problem still exists 
but only under super heavy data loads.

For me, I only occassionally push the router to its limit with heavy data 
loads. I'm not a downloading powerhouse so that could potentially be why I 
haven't been disconnected yet.
