What about Ubuntu ?
I can report that Ubuntu versions 17.10, 18.04, and 18.10 work nicely with zamia-speech. But: you have to build the whole system on your own and cannot take a short cut by installing packages. :-)
Maybe you can try the packages for Debian 9?

Could you elaborate on this ? It'd be nice to know step by step how you build the system on Ubuntu.

I followed the steps starting from https://github.com/gooofy/zamia-speech#requirements I would recommend reading the following sections before you start. And keep this statement from the "Setup Notes" section in mind: "This is in no way a complete set of instructions".
zamia-speech is definitely aimed at developers so there was never any intention of writing a fool-proof tutorial on setting up all the tools and scripts for end-users. That said, if you have material that you'd like to see added to the README or other suggestions and corrections, I will try to look into it.
