POP-WILDFIRE - access to valid pan-European data #13

Harmonisation Project in which this issue occurred

POP-WILDFIRE

Tool used

FME Desktop 2021

Description

The issue has been to identify the differences between the environmental datasets available for Spain (in where the original statistical model was designed) and the free access pan-European datasets that store similar information. Once those pan-European datasets were identified, an equivalence transformation was created to be able to incorporate the data from these pan-European datasets into the original model. Original dataset values -> equivalent to -> Pan-European datasets Rothermel fuel model (1983) Corine Land Cover National Slope dataset Copernicus slope dataset Allué climatic classification (1990) Köppen-Geiger climate classification

Type of issue

Lack of interoperability between Spanish and pan-European datasets

Workflow

Original model developed using national datasets that don´t exist at a pan-European level

Impact

Need to research and identify the correlation between the national and the European datasets.

Hi David, thanks for the issue.

Type of issue Are you able to provide URLs to the mentioned datasets ?

Type of issue Can you please describe more detailed the lack of interoperability between Spanish and pan-European datasets ?

Workflow What do you mean with "Original model" exactly ? What is the result of the "developement" exactly ?

Impact What is the difference between this issue and https://github.com/gopeg/feedback/issues/14 ?

Dear Claudia, pls find below the answer to your questions:

The original research study in which this project is based was developed for a specific area of Spain. At a country level there are specific climatic classification models (or vegetation models) that are developed for certain climatic characteristics that might or might not exist in other European areas. There are global climatic classification models that normally are less specific and are generally used for characterizing international climates. Unfortunately, is difficult to find translations between those different regional-international models. For this project, we have reviewed the existing documentation for both regional/national and pan-European vegetation and climatic classification models and create a translation between them.

Workflow What do you mean with "Original model" exactly ? What is the result of the "developement" exactly ?

The original research study in which this project is based was developed for a specific area of Spain, using only national data not existing at a pan-European level. The first development step was to find the pan-European datasets and translate their values into values that could be used to feed the process to obtain the different risk indexes.
