[Firefox] Filters gone #368

I encountered a bug were uBlock will not filter anything anymore because all filters are gone (fail to load?). This means the "3rd-party filters" tab is completely empty except for the “Auto-update filter lists” and “Parse and enforce cosmetic filters” check boxes as well as the custom filterlist textbox. All custom filters and all whitelist entries are gone, too. uBlock is active even on its own settings page.

Brower console yields the following messages, when opening the toolbar popup:

This state persists across browser restarts. It occurred once before but somehow solved itself. While it was still working, I enabled these filter lists in addition to the defaults:

I have Firefox 38.0.5 and uBlock Origin 0.9.8.2.

What does the browser console say if you disable then re-enable uBlock?

Given the error messages, it looks to me like your installation of uBlock is broken. You should reinstall, and check for abnormal conditions on your system, like low disk space.

When enabling the extension in a “live session“, the following messages appear:

I have plenty of free space (> 25 GiB). My Firefox profile is quite old, though, so that may be related. I’ll try reinstalling the extension, but wouldn’t (possibly corrupted) settings remain?

_Update:_ Actually, scratch that. After enabling it again it resumed working for now.

Still the same—0.9.8.2 from Mozilla Addons.

Update: I noticed 0.9.9.1 is available. It seems the review isn’t complete though? The presentation of experimental is the same as unreviewed.

Can you try with a more recent version, 0.9.9.2 or 0.9.9.1?

I don’t see any version 0.9.9.2. Even after removing, error messages from it continue until closing the browser.

Well, it’s occurring regularly again. I can work around the issue by starting Firefox with the add-on disabled and then enable it manually.

So I guess there is some sort of (race) condition when all the extensions are starting at the same(?) time.

I'm encountering the same issue on one of my two computers (both with Firefox 42.0a1 / uBlock0 0.9.9.2) , but I haven't been able yet to find what triggers this bug.

I'm shooting in the dark here, but, have you tried completely removing Adblock Edge (or other adblockers) instead of just disabling them, maybe they are interfering with the filters? One thing that you can try is disabling all add-ons except uBlock + 1, and then just test to see with which add-ons it works, and with which ones it doesn't.

OK I think I found the issue on my side: when changing dynamic filtering, there is now an eraser and a closed paslock on the top left of the filtering window: I have to click on the padlock so that the rules are moved from "temporary filtering" to "permanent filtering". Probably a new behavior, I didn't find it in the documentation.

You probably figured this by now but just in case, you can commit all the current temporary rules with one click, from the My rules pane in the dashboard.

Well, since there’s virtually no chance of tracking down what exactly is causing this, I used the “Refresh Firefox” feature and created a new profile. I never encountered the issue with any other Firefox installations, so the profile was probably busted.

So I’m closing this ticket.
