I've seen it the other way round, with Phoshare reporting more images than
iPhoto. That happens if you have online accounts (e.g. Flickr, MobileMe,
Facebook) with albums containing pictures that did not get uploaded from your
iPhoto library. Phoshare will see them in the library, but they aren't part of
"Photos" in iPhoto.

Upon further examination, it looks like iPhoto's AlbumData.xml (quite
reasonably) does not include photos marked as "Hidden" on iPhoto.
As a result, Phoshare (or other applications dependent on AlbumData.xml) would
not 'see' the hidden photos.
iPhoto: 53,156 photos (13 January 2011, including hidden)
Number of photos marked "Hidden": 412
That leaves:
iPhoto: 52,744 photos (13 January 2011, excluding hidden)
Phoshare: 52,809 photos (13 January 2011)
So actually, I'm experiencing the same thing as you –– that Phoshare
reports more images than iPhoto (excluding hidden images).
Note that I do not have online accounts linked to iPhoto, and albums (to the
best of my knowledge) only contain photos in the iPhoto library.

Thanks for investigating. The next Phoshare update will list the extra images
when you enable verbose output. I'll add a note to the docs about not being
able to export hidden images.
