I'm sure the Java and Python code could be improved, so feel free to make suggestions. However, this demo now runs on the JVM, so I'd like to get it approved before the end of July 2024.

@bhoran, do you mind adding an entry to the top-level README.md? This way we can track easily if the GitHub workflow passed.
