I've previously used similar displays in different systems and one of these coloured the country itself (the "fill" for the country) rather than overlaying a marker or dot. In some scenarios, e.g. when there are data available for many or all countries, colouring the country fill can be clearer, for example, see how busy/noisy our current map is:
I appreciate that it might be really tricky due to the graphics formats, but it would be a really useful option IMO.
