Official worldmap-panel #261

I'm a little bit lost... Which plugin should I use? https://github.com/grafana/worldmap-panel or https://github.com/panodata/grafana-map-panel

Which one is the official plugin? Is this one deprecated or only for older version of Grafana?

Dear @ae3e,

we've significantly improved the fork on panodata [1] and would like to see that being mainlined. @daniellee, @svet-b and @ryantxu also voted for that [2].

As we recognized @srclosson has been working on the upstream version recently, we've just added her to the list of maintainers on our fork.

Is there anything you can do about it in order to improve the situation, Stephanie?

With kind regards, Andreas.

I think you should use which ever one works best for you. We are planning to rewrite this totally in React and probably move it into core Grafana but I can't promise a deadline for that. If the panodata panel has features you need then you should definitely use it - @amotl is maintaining it more actively than the Grafana team is doing for the this panel.

Thanks for the answers.

I was particulary interested by opened PR #260 from @srclosson but also by an eventual migration to Openlayers

I'll keep following both projects!!

@daniellee You realize, that by announcing grafanalabs will be rewritting in React it will push community involvement in the plugin to a bit of a standstill for a looong time. This is certainly one of the special plugins that garners a lot of attention, for the wow factor and for its sheer usefulness. If you are rewritting it, why not do a testing campaign and merge with panodata and have the community support a single one while Grafanlabs does its thing on the side and creates essentially a new plugin. It is not as if the panodata one is broken by any means and a lot of effort was done to get the toolkit in! Anyway, great job with grafanacon2020, and when the dust settles, please consider what it would take to merge panodata back into mainline and get us out of the twilight zone.

@amotl Sorry! Just so busy I have not been able to get this done. Will try to make it a priority this week. Once it falls off the radar, it's hard to get it back on.

srclosson commented 4 years ago

Nuts... Still not finding the time. But it's on my Radar.

Hi there,

after some idle time, we have been able to give our grafana-map-panel fork some love again, integrated more valuable contributions from the community and made some releases.

With kind regards, Andreas.
