I completely agree with the single domain entry point, but I wholeheartedly disagree with the "URLs are getting less important" point. Only because Google tries to burry the URL to drive searches forward doesn't make them less important. In contrary I believe that a project like GDS is exactly the place to demonstrate how beautiful and meaningful URLs can make a concept and structure clearer for users.
Having a single domain as entry point to GDS has some advantages against a multi sub domain solution.
If your GDS is running distributed on multiple machines you can use Round-robin DNS and DDNS for load balancing or fault-tolerance.
