Just wondering if the consecutively numbered Membership IDs in CiviMember could have done the trick for you.

Maybe. I guess i wanted to follow the CiviCRM method for building an extension, so I just read the manual and did what it said. Also disconnected me from any sequencing problems when staging / loading the data.
