Come up with a different font or something to use for pronunciation guides.

The "bold plus shading" approach used in 2014 ACF Fall and other tournaments seems to work well, both for this need and to help more advanced readers skip the guides.

I'd also like to add support for indicating where pronunciation guides start in the regular text. In other words, both the original word and the pronunciation guide should be formatted differently so you can at a glance know to skip to the pronunciation guide if you want to do that. I'm thinking of maybe using pipes (|) to represent this.

May I suggest expropriating the Markdown link syntax ([foo](bar)) for use as pronunciation guides? I always thought quizbowl light markup should be less idiosyncratic and slightly more conventional (Markdown). That way you can take advantage of an existing Markdown parser and strip out/invalidate the features you don't need (block elements, etc.). Just an idea.
