What kind of icons did you think of? Showing a marker for each result in the autocomplete list and highlighting the one that is highlighted in the list as long as the list is open would be a start?

I'm not sure if it is an improvement to be honest (or if it is introduces too much clutter), but I could imagine to add a symbol on the left side of the text for various cases like a city/village, street ("highway"), building (complete address), shop, zoo, castle, museum, school or other POIs. (not sure what you mean with "highlighting" as the entry is already highlighted or do you mean to show it on the map if one selects the list entry?)
