switch to paying vendors out of Ally instead of New Alliance #1506

Reticketed from #68. Wait for initial deposit from Gittip on Friday.

A question based on this issue and #68:

if I understand correctly from your remarks, these changes would mean that New Alliance would contain: escrowed money from Gittip, Balanced fees and PayPal payouts. No money escrowed anymore at Balanced?

Furthermore, Gittip team account tips left over at the end of the kids eat first round of payday, would go to the Ally account?

All Gittip costs, except for Balanced, would be payed out from the Ally account?

Am I understanding this all correctly?

chadwhitacre commented 11 years ago

@mvdkleijn Close. We'll leave most of our escrow in Balanced. We'll move a portion of it to New Alliance each week (ballpark: 10%) as well as the amount needed to cover the Balanced fee, which they take out of New Alliance. We need a portion of escrow in New Alliance in order to fund PayPal and Coinbase payouts.

Furthermore, Gittip team account tips left over at the end of the kids eat first round of payday, would go to the Ally account?

Correct.

All Gittip costs, except for Balanced, would be payed out from the Ally account?

Correct.

@whit537 Right got it. So effectively the New Alliance account covers the Balanced fee and serves as an in-between account to facilitate payouts to PayPal and possibly Coinbase. I got a little confused there. If this structure is something you want to publicize on gittip.com, I'd be happy to write an about/finances or something.

Follow-up question: the finances.gittip.com site is currently a ’public secret’ as it were since it isn't automated yet. Would Ally have an interface to facilitate listing its inbound and outbound payments? (just a thought)

chadwhitacre commented 11 years ago

@mvdkleijn I started looking at Ally in the first place because I wanted to use Xero, and I couldn't connect New Alliance to Xero. Xero has an API, which I'm hoping we can eventually use to drive our financial reporting down the road (not part of Infrastructure).

Let's hold off on the finances doc until a future focus.

mvdkleijn commented 11 years ago

OK (but I don't think I'll contribute much this focus since I'm not a python developer)

chadwhitacre commented 11 years ago

@mvdkleijn FWIW, I have no problem with you and others keeping conversations going on tickets that aren't in focus right now. Back burner, keeping things warm for when we're eventually ready to shift focus.

Ah, StartSSL! When I click "Add Credit Card" in their Toolbox, I get an error message:

Approved Credit Card Exists

  • An approved credit card exists already!
  • The credit card details can not be changed after approval.

I've emailed them. Everything else is done.
