Thanks @mattbk, don't hesitate to let me know if anyone needs additional info. I'll do what I can to provide.

The details are a bit misty, but I do recall reading about both Patreon and Gratipay some years ago on a blog. I am ashamed to say, though, that it was actually the name Patreon that stuck in my mind. When I did recently look at Patreon it just didn't seem right to my engineer's sensibilities, and luckily I did remember at least there was another option! After that it did not take long looking on the web to find Gratipay.
