Understanding the map - OSM-Carto map reading Q&A at SotM 2021 #4429

There is going to be an OSM-Carto map reading workshop run by me at this year’s virtual State of the Map conference on July 11 at 12:15 UTC. All OSM-Carto developers are invited to participate. One of the purposes of the workshop is for us as developers to get a better understanding how map users view the map and where difficulties and misunderstandings in reading the map might occur that we are not aware of.

I started collecting a list of case examples on the wiki and on a pad. More details can also be found on my related diary entry.

Also of interest for people here could be the talk by @pnorman about OpenStreetMap Standard Layer: Who uses it?

This has now taken place so closing.

Thanks for everyone who contributed. There has been mentioning of various issues here in the discussion, specifically #1943 and #4169. There was also mentioning of the suggestion to indicate road ends tagged noexit=yes in some form. This is related to #4375.

I will probably write up some more things on this elsewhere.

Also wanted to point to another talk that refered to OSM-Carto quite a bit - by Brandon Liu: https://pretalx.com/sotm2021/talk/JGF9WA/.
