Metapost brackets? #1361

Right now the right and left brackets are drawn using font characters. Would it be possible to add an option to draw them with meta post instead, much like we do for the braces above and below the staff? If feasible, this would, in theory, allow users to hack the shape without recompiling fonts.

If someone can figure out the math to make nice looking brackets, then I welcome the suggestion. The metapost-drawn slurs are ugly at best.
