I have enrolled Grey Software as a project on CommunityBridge, and we are currently pending review.
I submitted the following proposal:
Grey Software is a not-for-profit open-source software organization that promotes freedom and collaboration.
We do this by:
Creating free apps and tools to improve the open-source software ecosystem.
Helping students learn software development by being mentored by open source maintainers.
Students crave real-world software development experience to stand out when they’re recruited into the modern tech economy.
Our apprentice program is an internship alternative for students, where they contribute to our open-source software (https://grey.software/projects) with structure and guidance from a mentor. Through this, they earn valuable skills and a public demonstration of their work.
Since we create our apps and teach students how to develop them simultaneously, it’s hard to define a structured curriculum and predict learning outcomes.
We propose that each project have creation teams and education teams.
The creation team evolves our products using the latest, most productive technologies and trends in software development.
The education team turns our products into projects that students can learn from. This team abstracts away certain software complexities, allowing students to gradually make their way to working with production code.
We are a student-run organization operating in 5 countries, based out of UofT’s Mississauga campus. We are currently recruiting a core team to maintain our software, create curricula, and teach students.
