Idk how we could implement an affiliate program, surely it could be abused?

Changing the identifier within the installer before downloading sounds complex, above the current capability of the static Gridcoin website.

"Ok. So I was thinking and talking about the same thing with other human beings. There are a couple of ideas that I have:

  1. Limit the amount of times one wallet/user can refer to 3 or 5.
  2. The referral bonus would be a one time payment of around 200grc (nothing insane, but triple digits).
  3. The referral bonus would become active after... maybe... the (referred) user gets their first 2 payments or some sort of threshold. Not a time threshold (like a week), but a PoR or point record stating they are an active member and will continue to be active for at least a while.

This system will be hard to abuse for a LOT of reasons. Setting up a wallet and making it active takes A LOT more work than generating an address and putting it into a faucet. If someone were to just make as many wallets as possible, the amount of time it would take to generate a bunch and make them active... They may as well be losing money with the amount of time and work it would take to set up a single wallet and get a ~$1 bonus.

If there are over 1200 active members on the Gridcoin community mining, and only 80 in IRC (30 of which ever look at chat), this means that only about 1/40th of the WHOLE COMMUNITY are "involved." If we tackle a way to indirectly involve them in boosting research and number of miners, this could be a huge success. People have to open their gridcoin wallet in order to get payments and stake or check their balance which means they will see everything on the first page. Put a referral code and simple explanation on that page and we have the potential to have 400-1100 GRC miners (not involved in IRC) in sharing Gridcoin with a friend. That already active miner would be compelled in setting the referred user up for a small, but reasonable bonus on their part. We give the user a bonus. We get another miner. We do no work in the process. This is the power of advertisement."
