add prov / lifecycle documentation #71

This PR adds documentation for the features introduced in #70, and performs some minor cleanup / annotation to existing documentation.

In the interest of updating our docs ahead of the manuscript reviewers, I'm going to muscle this one through with admin privileges, as it is documentation only.
