Somatic variants that are known to play an important role in cancer, but do not have directly actionable clinical information associated with them, are not currently incorporated into the CIViC evidence schema. However, functional information can impact clinical choices, particularly for variants where clinical data is unavailable. A new Evidence Type, termed Biological, will be added to CIViC and follow the established structure of Evidence records. Biological evidence will be assigned a potential clinical relevance associated with its function (e.g. Loss of function). Means to distinguish what type of experimental context generated the biological data (eg. cell line, in-silico, etc) will be built into the biological evidence item.
