I think there could be some aspects of this beyond browsing "files". I think the general problem is how to browse, search, select, and introspect content that is organized hierarchically. Aspects to consider:

scale: what if a given node has 1000's of children? search within children might help
search: what if the user doesn't know where in the hierarchy the item they are looking for is? search encompassing the whole tree might help
annotation: how can additional data be associated with each item to facilitate browsing? for example, file type or modification date
selection: is multi-selection needed?, consider aspects discussed in https://github.com/grommet/hpe-design-system/issues/2234
introspection: how can the user drill into an item to see all of its detail?
