Well then we'll lose the version information excepted from the URL and the version switcher. Having it in the README directly looks more relevant to me.

rspec 1 is as good as dead ... so I don't want to dedicate much space to it or distract "normal" rspec users with "do I have rspec 1 ?"
Why being so rude with people still using Rspec 1? 😄
Seriously I don't think it is an issue for people using the newer version of Rspec to see a section for Rspec 1 (I like to believe that people writing automated tests, have a more advance knowledge of their application and Rails development, so I think they know how to check their version of Rspec). But I think also people still using Rspec 1 have already a lot of pain with it, so it's always good to help them 😉

And honestly in the case of companies it could happen more often than you believe that they're using old versions. Let's be kind with those poor guys and give them some help.
Now if you're so concerned with this, then let's go with your first comment, it's a kind of compromise :)
