Section 6.2 Elimination Rounds #153

I would like to redesign this entire section. I think there should be exactly one standardized format in the rulebook which is expected to be used at every IBQ.

I currently don't have a proposal, but there are other open issues which concern details of this section and I think there should be an issue open which addresses the section as a whole.

Issue #88 is one issue which concerns this section and I will note others here if I find them.

I like having some options for brackets to accommodate unusual tournament lengths or (this year being a case in point) a nonstandard number of teams. Whether these should be listed or we should just have language allowing meet directors to override the standard if needed, I'm not sure. Maybe require an alternative bracket to be provided so many weeks before a tournament if it's going to be used.

Issue #49 concerning the role of the meet director is maybe where we would want to have this discussion.

It should be considered standard for meet directors to be able to override rules, WHEN AND ONLY WHEN there are logistical barriers to perfectly following them. A weird number of teams that don't match fairly on the typical bracket definitions would fall under this category.

I actually think it would be helpful for us to include a document adjacent to the rulebook (or in the rulebook) with elimination brackets for imperfect numbers of teams (not divisible by 9). This year's 10-team bracket was one that I came up with, and in the 2020-2021 season, Phil Osterlund and I came up with a 12 team bracket that sorted the teams based on their elimination round performance into a championship and consolation finals. I think this would not only be helpful for Internationals but also for other local and regional quizzing tournaments. I'm thinking it would be good to have these for 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 team elimination rounds, since at 15 teams, it would make sense to have a 9 team championship division and a 6 team consolation division. I could be persuaded to have a separate consolation division that is 4 or 5 teams as well to keep the 9 team championship division.

This sounds fantastic @JoshJetto . We can abstract all those logistics from the rulebook itself, and simply put a rule in the Internationals section of the rulebook specifying that the tournament setup will be conducted according to the external document.

I've always been annoyed by how many pages the tournament stuff takes up.
