Branded overlay images cannot be shared on pinterest #13338

When attempting to share images from guardian content on pinterest the user will see the option to share the version of the image that has the theguardian overlay on it, and the original image. If the user attempts to pin the version with the overlay it will fail to pin with the message, "Oops! Sorry, we were unable to fetch the image." The original image can be shared without issue.

  1. Copy the url for guardian content with images
  2. Go to pin new content in pinterest
  3. Select pin from the web
  4. Paste the guardian url and select next
  5. Select the image with the guardian overlay
  6. Select a board then click on save
  7. Observe that the image fails to pin

Image should pin without issue.

One option: sites can add data-pin-media="example.jpg" for Pinterest sharing

You can go to https://uk.pinterest.com/source/theguardian.com/ to see content from The Guardian:

The Guardian on Pinterest

Interestingly, someone has successfully shared the Open Graph image there...

@katebee interesting. I did check this page when initially testing, but now I can see two examples of the Open Graph image. The one above and this square image with the overlay cut off:
