g.gamer0 , many thanks for your help at the moment, we really appreciate !
I believe there are a lot of workarounds to try...at the moment you found a way
to fix the issue if the bios order is changed, we only need to find the way to
fix the black screen for whom didnt make the change, meant for whom can´t
easily boot from usb...
seems very interesting what you posted.
Im not able to make those tests yet, but Im searching to help, and probably at
the end of the week I will be more helpful...

Doing some tests. I completely wiped the hard drive and reset the bios. The
goal here was to see if it would boot to the USB when seeing no system on the
hard drive. Boooting left me with a black screen again. no acer logo, no
nothing. It did not boot to usb on its own. I found that i had to have the usb
inserted and do the above (power+win button to cursor) then it did boot to usb
but only after i did that. Even then the usb boot too aprox 2 - 3 minutes
before anything came on the screen, this may be due to the fact that i found
network boot by default is above usb, so i believe it looked there first.
I'll keep testing some things. I hope this is helping someone

Another issue i found, and this maybe so stupid we all overlooked it. I could
not restore using the win7 usb, or the win7 disks from acer or install using my
android usb. Even though i could boot from usb after doing the above. After
going insane, it occured to me that something was preventing the hard drive
from being default install media. It was the SDcard. I removed the SD card and
all was well. I don't think this has much affect on most of you but may get
someone thinking in the right direction.

Has anyone removed the back cover and disconnect the battery for a day or so? I
think this may bring some of your tablets back. I have done this with desktops
(cmos battery and no power) and with laptops. Many hold a bad setting in memory
and any power retains that memory. Removing all power for an amount of time
will clear that. I have seen many laptops boot right up after doing this, and
they didn't boot at all before (when i say didn't boot i mean they did nothing
just powered on on thats it, no screen, no nothing).

G.Gamer0, let me ask you something, to sum up what you did to boot in this
second method:
1) attach USB dock/Keyboard
2) insert pendrive with freedos
3) press and hold the Start Button (this is the start button on the tablet, not the keyboard) and then press and hold the Power Button.
4) wait a few minutes (because network boot is above usb boot) and you will got a screen with freedos
Are those steps correct ?
If yes, on step 2, did you insert the pendrive on acer or in the dock ? Can be
any usb ?.
On step 3, did you press power and start or power+win ?

If your install went bad, it wont boot from the hard drive. Your only chance is
to replace the drive (a quick look at new the same size mSSD is arounf 40-50
dollars). or get it to boot from usb or CD. To do the second you must do
exactly as follows to bypass the hard drive.
1) turn the tablet off, not just pressing the button on the front, hold the
side power button in till the tablet completely shuts down.
2) Wait a bit for the power to discharge (i waited about an hour).
3) insert the tablet into the dock
4) Press and hold the side power button and the start button (win button) on
the tablet, not the one on keyboard
5) when you see a blinking cursor, quickly let go of the start button and hit
F2 or F12 on the keyboard (F2 is Bios, F12 is boot menu)
when i blacked mine on purpose, i had no screen. no logo, nothing. By doing
this i was able to get to bios the first time. The boot menu did not work for
me. Once to bios i set USB as first boot. This will save you next time.
Thge second time i blacked it i was not able to get to bios, but by doing this
was able to boot a flash drive with win8 devoloper. I installed that and the
tablet worked fine then.
I think all the problems stem from a bad install of andriod. It seems that if
the tablet can't boot from the hard drive it does nothing. It won't even boot
from usb unless you do the steps above. This is bad design on Acer's part.
I find it very hard to believe anyone has a over written bios. For that to
happen the program had to be specifically written to do that, it doesn't just
erase and i don't see android doping that. I believe we just need to get it to
boot from something and all will be fine.
Some of you have an Acer logo. that is good do the steps above and you should
be able to get booting from USB.
The ones that this doesn't work, pull the hard drive. You should get an error
on screen. That is good because all is well. Do the steps above and set the
bios to boot USB and CD first. SHut down and put the hard drive back in.
Note: Some boots i had to have a usb inserted to get the boot option for it in
bios. Some boots i did not. I would have one just in case.
Also after reseting the bios and changing boot order, sometimes it would just
boot to usb, sometimes not - it would go to hard drive. In that case do the
step above but do not hit F2 or F12. It will go to USB after you release the
buttons.
Hope this helps everyone. Make sure you try both ways. and either have your
restore disks ready or make a win 7 iso on usb (direction in my earlier posts).

When you want Dual Boot with Android, the safe way is change bootloader to
Windows. Use EasyBCD to do that and go back to Windows Repair tool and type
command:
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr.( need unmount SD memory)
How to fix when you see the black screen when Android bootloader is damage?
Only 1 way is format the SSD hard drive.
Original comment by nnquoct...@gmail.com
on 17 Jan 2012 at 8:07
I agree with nnquoct. Considering the bricking problem some people are
experiencing, I personally would not mess with installing Android directly to
the SSD drive. You should install android on a fat32 SD card or USB drive.
If you then want the speed of running android from the SSD, you should simply
copy the android directory from the SD/USB to the root of the SSD drive, and
then use EasyBCD to modify the Windows boot loader to add an option for
Android. Details of using this method are provided in the following post -
just search for EasyBCD.

skips the BIOS cheek. now here is the real problem.
Once that is done you know that your Bios is there but you still can't boot

I had similar problems with installing 3.2 on my W500.
What I did was installed W8, replacing W7, no issues.
Then I installed A3.2 to the SSD, no format, dual boot. Still ok.
Wanted W7 back, because of WMC. Used recovery CDs & external USB.
Toasts the boot loader it seems, and the 'recovery' partition seemed to cause
grief because reinstalling Android didn't work.
Used Ubuntu disk to run Ubuntu from the CD and GParted to just delete all
partitions.
Then used windows 7 recovery, but still issues, no boot.
But installed Android to SSD no format, which installed GRUB and it found the
windows install.
However, windows scripts messed up GRUB again. Had to reinstall Android again.
In the end I am now back to dual boot, but it no longer has the recovery
partition, so I need to keep the disks safe :)
Oh, and I had a hell of a time with keeping it booting from the usb dvd, but I
think that is the dvd drive issue. However F12 will display the boot menu, but
while you have the fast boot set on in the bios, it is hard to get. To get into
the bios to turn it off,

Oh I should note, going by memory, just before the last install of Android,
(Ice Cream, by the way), nothing would boot again.
Another tip, once back working, you may want to edit Menu in the C:\GRUB folder
with notepad and change default=0 to default=2 if you want windows to be
default.
I have not tried this, not positive with the recovery disks, but I believe now
to remove GRUB would need to get the windows boot loader re-installed.
If you are not going to keep Android in dual boot, and the machine is under
warranty, I think from GPart in ubuntu I would just format the second drive on
the SSD to NTFS, then use the recovery disks, and if no boot, send it in for
repairs. Don't delete the first one or they would likely charge you would be my
guess.

And I did try just deleting the second partition labeled ACER in GParted and
using the recovery disks, but it did not work. I am not sure if the cause was
my install of W8 originally or not, so it may work for you.

so the problem from windows 7
Original comment by magosof...@gmail.com
on 30 Jan 2012 at 8:52
Well I did fix mine by using ubuntu live, gpart and delete all partitions, left
unpartitioned, used recovery disks, install android on NTFS with windows.
The only way I could get to boot to windows 7 doing this was via GRUB though.
The recovery disks do not seem to put in the windows boot loader. Or that is
how it acted. I suspect they boot loaded from the recovery partition and the
recovery disks do not recreate that partition.
The tablet went back yesterday, unrelated, due to defective USB port. 14 day
return policy is useful, but had to order the replacement online, likely be
here in the next few days. It will be original install again.
When I get it I will try loading android again on the NTFS partition, but
without installing Windows 8, and track my steps closer. See what happens.
Original comment by mobarton...@gmail.com
on 3 Feb 2012 at 1:07
Oh, abhaba, I found getting into the bios tricky the first time. And once the
boot loader is messed, I do not remember seeing a cursor.
Did you try pressing power and windows button on the front of the tablet at the
same time, and once the light comes on, continually pressing up and down the F2
key? Not waiting for a cursor?
If you do get in, like posted before, turn off the quick boot. Then you should
be able to use F12 for selecting boot device.
Original comment by mobarton...@gmail.com
on 3 Feb 2012 at 1:54
Ok, well Acer uses the first partition as the system partition and the boot on
it. Why W8 messes things up I believe.
I attached the files from the partition in case it helps someone. It is NTFS,
labeled SYSTEM RESERVED and is 111,144,960 bytes. May need to use linux and
gparted to set things up, like a ubuntu live cd, make sure this first partition
is system, primary and the second boot primary (and the C drive).
I also don't think installing W8 or Android really bricks things, just messes
up the way Acer does the boot. And the recovery disks they provide will not
recreate this partition and expects this partition to be system for boot. Why
the linux boot loader or another would work.

I also wanted to note that I found to boot from the USB DVD Drive, I had to go
into the bios every boot and save for the drive to be in the boot menu. Didn't
have to change anything, although you may want the USB CDROM to be ahead of the
SSD. Probably a BIOS issue, but workable. I have bios version 1.08

For everyone with this problem, here is another way to solve it, but needs that
you can open your Iconia.
Someone in a spanish forum that I use, solved this problem using a SSD from
other Iconia that boots with no problems. So, that SSD allowed him to enter
the BIOS without issues, change the booting options, and then installing back
his own SSD and recovering the system from an external unit (before it reaches
the SSD).
The result is that his Iconia is back and working perfectly again.
Is another idea, but you need a friend with a working Iconia that lends you his
disc for a moment. And both agree to open your Iconias.
Hope this helps too.
Sorry for my english, I'm out of practice.

While I was in the same situation briccato Iconia Tab, and I was really scared.
My situation was windows 7 on C:, 8 win on D: and installed androidx86 amd_brazor on microSD.
...
...
...
Until riavviavo Android, everything went smooth ... the first reboot in windows7 still okay, but on reboot for the first time since windows8, when I rebooted, and 'written' error 15 'and it' was the end.
not access the Bios, no option bootselect not boot from USB and not recognize eRicovery .... dramatic.
For three days I tried everything.
This morning, extreme act ..... I removed the body, I removed the SSD memory, I turned on the tablet boot from usb (now I can go into bios and if memory 'removed!) and the installation of USB key starts.
Now, I started installation (without mounted SSD) but as if I had, at this moment I entered the SSD in the slot, I waited 5 minutes, I restarted the PC, and the next install windows7 from USB Memory took over! !
To be safe I deleted the partitions and installed clean, but I think "Start Recovery" would have solved the same.

The problem isn't the BIOS, is a conflict with the solid memory of 32gb, the
bootloader damaged of win8 at the first boot erase the address in the file
system.
Unmounting it.
Who has courage to unmount the tablet, there are videos on the web on how to
remove cover to access the internal components, is not 'difficult.
Requires a USB key drive boot with windows 7.
A usb keyboard.
Remove the memory solid (! Attention within the left corner, there is' a tiny little switch, but the rewards will not turn on the computer!)
If you begin an installation USB and memory and solid 'removed, a normal windows installation begins, PRESS THE BUTTON BEFORE STARTING INSTALLATION, INSTALL THE MEMORY and hold FITTED WITH THE HAND, the windows will detect no', then turn off.
Now, with the added memory, repeat the installation, and will go 'well this time.

I had this problem and have sucdessfully resolved it.
1. Remove SSD
2. Buy a msata to sata adapter $15.00 at Newegg
3. install SSD into adapter and then install in a laptop
4. Reformat SSD
5. Install windows 7 and reboot to ensure you have a good install
6. Remove ssd from laptop and install in W500
7. Boot W500 and F2 at ACER screen. This gave me access to bios again. Hurray!
8. Set USB HDD as first priority for boot and SanDisk SSD as last. Save and
reboot.
9. I then reinstalled Windows 7 (format HDD)from USB created with Win7 USB/DVD
Tool from microsoft. This cleaned up the installation and some driver issues
from the laptop install.
10. Rebooted after Win7 install finished and tablet booted normally.
11. Dowloaded latest drivers from ACER and installed.
Everything is back working.

If anyone still has an issue with a bricked acer Iconia W500 here is the
solution and the one that acer uses themselves. The community will need
someone with a working W500 to follow these instructions and then upload a copy
of their working BIOS so that those with a flashed BIOS can restore the image
http://forum.notebookreview.com/toshiba/594618-insydeh20-bios-modding-zone.html
I have done this and it works unfortunately I no longer have my W500 otherwise
I would do this for everyone experiencing this issue and upload an image
because it beats the hell out of sending it in to the manufacturer. Acer should
have offered a BIOS image on their site just like they do for hardware such as
the Acer Aspire one and am quite baffled at why they do not.

hi symons
You may be right for the process but its just half of it. It does not show how
to put the bios in your not working w500. Would you please put some light on
that or setep down the process followed by you.
Presently my out of warranty W500 is lying in a drawer from last 3 months as
it’s in the same state as many of the people above. After installing android
it didn’t boot up. Have tried every option available on the net till date.
Which includes taking apart the w500, formatting and installing new os(win7,
win8, ubuntu, android, dual boot, even tried my NAS os)in SSD. Had bought SATA
to mSATA adapter from ebay which took 40 days to reach me from china...(look at
my patience...:)). Have even tried cutting one terminal of cmos battery and
resoldering it. but no luck. Just few days back got hand on service manual
which explains the process of reflashing the bios with the bios available in
acer website but that does not seem to work. have only tried once. It also
shows the cmos reset jumper (yes W500 has one) which is next to the processor.
Will have to take the heatsink out for that and thats the last resort which i
am having. In last 3 months have gone to every nook and corner of the web,
insyde bios, acer blogs etc.
My only submission after this experience is never mess with acer stuff. Have a
acer one which is presently substituting to the work of this w500 and now I am
even scared to upgrade the os on this baby…:).
If you are interested in the link to the service manual. Search for EAB00X64.fd
in google and you will get the guide in mycomp.su.
Do let me know if anyone gets thru with this.
