I believe this fixes #1159 and doesn't seem to break anything else...

I'm going to amend this PR with some additional tests, of course, but figured I submit the patch itself already.

@phated Aaargh, sorry... Looks like I built this off a branch which already had PR #40 in it... The interesting bit here is just this commit
