Hi Adil,
Where does this layout comes from? Is this the most common layout used by Urdu
population? What are the competing layouts to this?
Thanks,
Cibu

hi Cibu
thanks for your reply.
well let me tell you that the earlier keyboard layout that i had attached is the
phonetic keyboard which works with the sound of the words. e.g 'a' button of the
keyboard contain an Urdu word which is similar to the sound of 'a' and same is
the
case for other characters. This was not mostly used in the past but currently
is is
gaining pace and is considered a better and easy to use layout.
below is the link of the the basic Urdu keyboard layout which is used by the
famous
Urdu editor known as 'Inpage'.

Another link that might be useful regarding virtual keyboard of Urdu language is
listed below.

also have a visit to www.crulp.org which is center for research in Urdu
language of
Pakistan.

I see lot of varieties of Urdu layout
1. NLA (wikipedia says this is the standard)
2. Phonetic: your doc. Is there any references for that?
3. Inpage
4. Another phonetic: http://neosense.com/urdu-keyboard/
and lot more.
I am wondering how would I establish which one community is most familiar with.

Its not a big difference. Being a user I will say that there should be a
provision of
Urdu keyboard. Urdu is the language of more than 174 million population and well
recognized in south asia as well as UK, USA, and EU. I think CRULP's guidelines
are
more preferred being a research project working from some last years. However
Mr.
Adil can forward some concrete suggestions in this regard.

well Mr cibucj
there are two standard keyboard layouts known as
phonetic and window keyboard
the reference for window keyboard is
http://www.crulp.org/Downloads/Microsoft%20Windows%20Urdu%20Keyboard.pdf
among your options
1. NLA (wikipedia says this is the standard)
2. Phonetic: your doc.
4. Another phonetic: http://neosense.com/urdu-keyboard/
are known as phonetic and there is no major difference among them.
The one that is standard is the one that you saw at
1. NLA (wikipedia says this is the standard)
i'd like to tell you that there is no much difference with the one i have
attached
with my first message.
Now a days the phonetic keyboard is used mostly and there are even phonetics
layouts
available for windows too.
so if you are going to work on i'd suggest you to work on the phonetic one as
it is
easy to grab and then comparatively fast to use as compared to the window one.

adil

later

Dear adilmukarram,
This is what I was thinking: There are lot of keyboard layouts for Urdu. I
would like to get a sense of the popular ones out there.
However, this discussion forum is may not be reaching many people. At the same
time, more eyeballs would be looking at an wikipedia
article. So I would like you to add the above information in
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urdu_keyboard for validation from wider
audience.
Currently, I feel, UZT 1.01 from NLA is the standard and should work as listed
in used in MS windows: http://ur.wikipedia.org/wiki/
معاونت:پڑھنا_لکھنا_دشوار؟_(ونڈوز_ایکس_پی)
Also, the phonetic alternate could be CRULP.
At the same time, from the discussions here, I feel, there is definitely a
recent push towards CRULP. May be we should go for both.

Dear Cibucj
i have composed some para which i think can be added to wikipedia . they are
"With the UZT keyboard the other keyboard that is used common is the phonetic
keyboard. Phonetic keyboards works with the sound of the words. e.g. 'a' button
of
the English keyboard contain an Urdu word which is similar to the sound of 'a'
and
same is the case for other characters. This was not mostly used in the past but
currently it is gaining pace and is considered a better and easy to use layout.
CRULP (Center for research for Urdu language processing) has been working on
phonetic
keyboard designs for URDU and other local languages of Pakistan. CRULP Urdu Phonetic
Keyboard Layout v1.1 for Windows (
http://www.crulp.org/software/localization/keyboards/CRULPphonetickbv1.1.html)
is
very famous and considered as a standard now for typing Urdu on Microsoft
platform.
This version is widely accepted by local language community and has been
finalized
after valuable feedback from users. "
after your review i will try to add it to wikipedia.

Adil

Adil,
Please add that to wikipedia. People watching the urdu keyboard page will
surely review
that and amend it. However, I won't be able to review it since I lack
experience with
Urdu keyboard :(
