What version of ElectricSleep are you using? Latest

On what android device and android version? HTC Desire, 2.2

Please provide any additional information below.

The app works fine in force screen on mode but this is still a serious flaw. 
The screen is blasting out at full brightness all night. This will reduce the 
phone's lifespan and compromises the darkness of the room.

This is HTC's fault, and I cannot do anything about it. It could be fixed in a 
future update to your version of android. Sorry!
