Branch for doing categorical/coordinate studies in slotnick et al.,

@vishaalprasad I've just made comments in every section of the Slotnick code I changed. Could you take a look in the week or so? I will hold off merging until you're done.

I will tag the final commit here so that we know the final submission spot for VSS 2016, regardless of what extra commits we add to improve the code further.
