Is the data available, or do I have the infrastructure and support to capture it myself?
Are there people with relevant experience that I trust, who I can bounce this topic off for feedback?
Shorter term: can I get paid to do this?
Longer term: is this likely to look good when putting in my first/next funding application
Will this allow me to disseminate my work in the journals / conferences I want to target?

Are the tools I need to use / build to work on this research topic likely to be useful to others in the field?
If so, can I find someone else in the field to also champion them?
And after that, can I put in to run a (ideally paid) tutorial at a major conference with that person?
And if I do that, is it more likely that I’ll get invited on to a panel?
What doesn’t work:
Chasing the money. Funding trends are set months and years ahead. If you’re chasing the money, you’re up against people who’ve invested time in getting a track record in the hot new funding topic. Pick a sub-field that excites you and work with others to fight for more money for it.
Doing things alone. Research is still, in most fields, about who you know and who knows you. Listen to people and be interested in their research.
