We can use jupyter book to write an academic paper, including citations.

We should consult this citations guide and provide some additional examples / context / instructions about citations (or at least provide a link to the citations reference).

Since there are already some example references and links in the provided markdown.md file, perhaps we could diverge the template and provide a separate template for an academic journal article, focusing more on the article publishing workflow instead of the educational materials share out workflow.
