What do you think about the attached one?

It can sit as a place holder. We definitely need one with more meaning, and a
svg file.

We may launch some kind of a contest on the forum thread, or ask DJPeng to
launch a
contest by taking advantage of the Mac4Lin release ?
Original comment by pierre.s...@gmail.com

I don't yet think we have a sufficiently large user base for a contest.
Look at the brainstorm counter as an indicater?
Original comment by rainwood...@gmail.com
on 11 Jan 2009 at 8:44
That's why I was thinking of using the Mac4Lin userbase.
But you're right, we may risk to get someone coming with something crappy and be
forced to accept it...
Putting that problem on hold then.

We can also make a customized one for xfce.

Something tangoish?
Those icons are not consistent
Original comment by andrea.c...@gmail.com
on 25 Jan 2009 at 9:28
That's actually the thing we'd like.
The idea is to be as Gnome-compliant as possible in order to be included
mainstream.
Do you have any idea as to what we could choose as an icon ?
Original comment by pierre.s...@gmail.com
on 25 Jan 2009 at 1:34
I've create a quick icon (attached), use it if you like. I'm not sure about the
GNOME
foot, it is nice and fits well, but it may cause problems with licenses.
Here > http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3162/ggmappletselect.png is a screenshot
of the
applet selector in gnome.

Hi, great job so far guys! The project is gaining more support and becoming
more stable.
This one is an interesting issue so I thought I'd contribute a bit. Attached is
a
Tango-compliant svg icon for the applet. I think the arrow (instead of GNOME
logo)
tells a better story of what the applet does.
What do you guys think?

i did an small modification, so it looks more like a window
Original comment by sl.solaris@gmail.com
on 25 Feb 2009 at 1:37

That's also an option that might work. Even better if the window is detached
and look
more realistic.
I made another one around the same theme. This time it's .png in a whopping
512x512
pixels. Even though GNOME has no use for it :-) Well, just to illustrate the
point.
Anyway, think with me for a second. My core idea that i wanted to convey was
that the
icon, with its bare minimum objects, should tell the user that upon activation,
the
applet will relocate the menubar in a given window to a different container. In
this
case somewhere outside and upwards, hence the arrow.
Well for my own learning experience, "Global", "Menu" and "Bar" are three
difficult
words to illustrate effectively in a 48x48 pixels canvas without resorting to
literal
depictions. :-)
Any thoughts?

Hi, I lkie the idea (especially the latest one) however if you stretch it down
to
32x32 (which is the size it will appear in the "Add applet" box) it becomes
totally
unreadable.
May I suggest you o try plying a bit with object and sizes to make it readable
even
at smaller sizes? perhaps if you move the black arrow a little bit downwards
and cut
the menu bar a bit on the right side it might be better...
Original comment by lviggi...@gmail.com

I agree, good idea, but the last icon is defently to much "mac".

You can test it yourself if you like. Just
convert the svg into a png file and drop
it into the /32x32/apps directory of
your "hicolor" icon theme.
Original comment by kraft.se...@gmail.com

It was not about installing, it was about something more like this (and less
mac-like)

yeah it's definitely too mac-ish :-) Don't worry though, it was just for
illustration
purpose. That kind of icon might be more popular with the Mac4Lin community. :-)
I can try and make one with the menu detached.
However, the question remains, the greatest challenge is how to make the icon
self-explaining with just 48x48 canvas to work with. Now it seems that an
arrow, a
menu and a window is too much 'clutter' to fit in that 48x48 constraint.
Good example: the icon for 'Battery Charge Monitor' applet has only one object:
a
battery. That's already self-explaining in itself, no need for other objects.
Anyone got any other metaphor besides my idea?
some keywords: document-centric paradigm, menubar, desktop, panel, window, menu
items, mouse pointer, fitt's law, ...
Eventhough it's mainly targeted for GNOME, i hope that the icon won't have a
GNOME
logo in it because: (1) at small sizes it's unrecognizable (2) doesn't really
help
explaining the purpose of the applet (3) specific distros or other DE like Xfce
would
probably like their own logo in it, so staying neutral is a virtue here.
I think setting this issue for milestone 1.0 was indeed a good idea :-) It's not
exactly easy.

Do you want to change the blue of the titlebar or the color of the arrow? I
guess the
blue is okay, because most of the window relevant icons use a blue titlebar
(from the
hicolor, gnome, and tango icon themes), so there is a better recognition.

What about xdg-icon-resource? How much is it available?
I am worrying if we directly install to that location some distos won't be
happy.
But I am also worrying if we use xdg-icon-resource some other distos won't be
happy
because the tool is not installed.
Anyways if everyone here is satisfied with the icon i'll push it into 0.7.5.
