Merged in branches for PRs #214 #215 #216 #217. Fixes #161 #166 #203 #205 #207 #213 #223. Also general scrub of README installation steps. Bumps app version to 1.4.0.

@kilahimm As per my comment on #63, I don't have any concerns with proceeding with this PR and merging it if it looks good to you.
