Source Code??? #16

The whole spirit of GitHub is to publish the source code so everyone can take advantage and share the code within the community?

h-RAT commented 9 months ago

Sorry that's not my case.

I didn't spend X hours on this project to see my code wandering everywhere without credits.

You are free to do the same things if you want, you are free to share, free to waste your time, free not to use my project.

The spirit of github is nice, but the people are not.

Do not take this the wrong way, I have been in your situation, retired software engineer. I appreciate what you are trying to do. Just trying to give you some advice.

Offer your bin file or a feature reduced version of your bin file for free. Then add small feature packs that they can purchase for a small amount. I am also sure the many folks who download your bin files do not even buy you a coffee. It is the nature of the business. Sell the source for a small amount for those that are interested.

Unfortunately the software business has become a commodity these days. Unless you are a large corporate entity, making money from source code or software is past its time. Many developers who write open source are using this as resume building or just for fun.

Look at Flipper Zero, The device is selling like hot cakes, but everyone is giving their software away. How many of the script kiddie types do you think would purchase the software? Not very many. So you have to be more creative. Answer questions on Discord all you want, but try to come up with a way to incorporate this effort to make the masses believe that they will get something if they purchase you feature packs.

Will it work, maybe not, Many folks are way to cheap to value the work developers put into their software. I do videos on youtube, I also use to have a blog that I did some embedded software on. It was so popular that Radio Shack used to point folks to my site for info. I had only one person donate $20.00 for some work that I did on a Robot kit that Radio Shack sold.

Unfortunately this is the nature of the beast. You have to evaluate where you want to spend your resources and what will get you ahead in this industry. Do it for fun if that will make you happy. But you cannot get mad if no one will purchase your goods.

Look at Lady Ada at Adafruit, she makes millions selling hardware, but she gives the software away. You have to ask yourself. What does she know about the business?

Take it easy. Joe

..."It began upon the following occasion: It is allowed on all hands, that the primitive way of breaking eggs before we eat them, was upon the larger end: but his present Majesty's grandfather, while he was a boy, going to eat an egg, and breaking it according to the ancient practice, happened to cut one of his fingers. Whereupon the Emperor his father published an edict, commanding all his subjects, upon great penalties, to break the smaller end of their eggs." Jonathan Swift
