"make check" exits with return code 0 even when tests fail #77

Packaging scripts which invoke make check have no way to notice that the tests have failed.

c8adb2a322c1f9fcfbb80a4e8dd01ac0a52f263b is the fix, ~but it's not released~ backported to 3.0.4 and 3.1.1.
