[Documentation] Create a document that compares habitat with similar technologies #2587

Open ShalokShalom opened 7 years ago

Much people come from another package management system and I feel one page which shows the differences is nice, so here are some ideas about that:

Show first a comparison chart:

~ example ~

Then one section, which lists general differences between Habitat and similar technologies.

1) core/gcc and core/make have to be included in the pkg_build_deps and so on. 2) one other example is the terminology, 3) the nature of the origins

And then specific sections who provide guide lines how to switch in detail.

Here is a proposal for Pacman: https://gist.github.com/ShalokShalom/95009e04452de8407c794af8c6df3695

Thank you for opening this issue! We have in the past had conversations about having a technology comparison chart or docs page and I definitely think thats something we should do. But I don't know if comparing habitat with other package managers is the right comparison to make unless we are explicitly comparing our build-time and runtime against something like flatpak.

I'm going to update this issue to be a bit more generic and we'll keep it open!

This here is an early draft about such an overview in graphical form. It covers some of the basic differences and similarities between Habitat and other PMS.
