Firefox crashes when opening a website #385

Over the last few weeks I've had the problem that Firefox crashes when I open any website. It feels like this happens on average with every 50th website (even Google or YouTube) and sometimes several times in a row, then again not at all for hours. If I then reload the page after the crash, it often works without any problems. Only rarely can I reproduce the problem directly by reloading the URL. After a lot of trial and error, it seems to be due to NoScript in that if I deactivate the add-on, I no longer have any problems.

What could be the reason for this and how could the problem be narrowed down further?

I have just taken 2 GIFs to illustrate the problem. One with NoScript enabled (top right), one without. URL (but currently it seems to crash with any soundcloud.com/*-link): https://soundcloud.com/rok-nardin/rok-nardin-quantum-field-andor-trailer-music

Crash: crash

No NoScript, no crash: no-crash

It might be related to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1782501

I need some more info, though:

  1. Firefox version
  2. NoScript version
  3. Exact set of permissions on the site(s) you can see this happening (if they're permanent, you may want to send me - privately if you prefer - your NoScript Options>Export file.

Thanks!

  1. 131.0.2 (64-Bit)
  2. Version 11.4.42
  3. A few examples (feels like it could happen on any website or, as mentioned, HAS actually happened on many websites):

Soundcloud: grafik

Google: grafik

YouTube: grafik

A similar issue here. Several months ago, Firefox tabs (even as typical as Google search results) started occasionally crashing on opening, but reloading the page would solve it. This time, I found a web page that causes a crash on every reload on two different computers. My current configuration is Firefox 131.0.3 Windows x64, NoScript 11.4.42, but the situation has lately been more or less the same regardless of updates. The page in question is https://dzen.ru/a/ZBL3V94rhCXx2RSK and the crash occurs while the tab header still shows an hourglass (the page has loaded but some scripts are still running). Disabling NoScript stops the crashes. The only way I found to get the page to load successfully with NoScript enabled is as follows:

  1. Disable NoScript.
  2. Open this page in a new tab, wait for it to load and all the scripts to finish (the hourglass icon in the tab header changes back to favicon), then close the tab.
  3. Re-enable NoScript.
  4. Open this page in a new tab.

This works in most cases but not always. Simply disabling and re-enabling NoScript doesn't work. Opening the page and closing the tab before the hourglass has disappeared doesn't seem to work either. Also, if the page loads successfully and I attempt to reload it, the tab starts crashing again.
