@egasimus, you might consider giving a try to fannheyward/coc-rust-analyzer.

AFAIK, it's stable, might be used as a drop-in replacement and does not rely on rust toolchain components, therefore it's not necessary to use neither nix-shell nor direnv, if that's the issue.
