@kaihendry: Think of people who haven't been to the webpage before. I agree to the usefulness of events/tweets, but I want people to immediately know what our website's about. We can't depend on them to click on /about.
Redirect new users to http://hackerspace.sg/about/ ? I don't like the idea of having the main page decrease in usefulness.
@kaihendry: if you want a useful page, you should create a dashboard instead of subjecting all new visitors who might want to find out about HackerspaceSG to our list of (possibly irrelevant to them) events.
Erm, you can't reliably identify new users, so this will suck pretty badly.
Perhaps I missed it: have you stated in positive terms:

I'll merge this in. We can talk about new website structure in an appropriate issue.
I prefer the front page to have practical information. This stuff should be in the About section?
