This is my proposal for the first bar chart on the Topics/Data Appendix page. I have tried to very much keep the clean look of the previous chart, as I know this was valued.

The changes I am suggesting are to make the chart show the actual data that was collected, i.e., number of responses for each of the possible answers. And then to do the grouping / mapping of these responses into levels of need and mastery / audience as additional elements on the outside of the chart.

I have also added a box into the need line that says "no need" (we can work on wording!), so as not to mix up mastery and need and have duplicated info.

This is only a sketch but I hope that it conveys the general idea in order to gather feedback. Please let me know what you think! @kit-katrina20 @bonniewolfe

One additional comment in regards to the space between bars. The data being represented is discrete, so I believe that it is best practice to show the data points as separated, rather than connected.

(Definitions: discrete data is countable and has clear spaces between values, e.g., number of people in a class. Continuous data is measurable and can take any value within a range, e.g., a person's height or weight).

Moving on to the next step in the story, after this headline chart, I would want to ask and answer the question "who is most likely to have a need for help". This is where we can layer in the brigade size, and investigate the hypothesis that small MSAs are more likely to need help.

You could use pie charts for this but I'm not a fan. So this is an example visualization using a stacked bar instead:

You can play around with the data and see how this chart would look for all of the 19 Topic areas by using this spreadsheet. Go to the tab called "Need charts" and then use the drop-down menu in cell B27 to switch between the different topic areas.

After looking a who has need (i.e. the demand side of the problem) I would then look at who can provide good assets (i.e. the supply side of the problem). The same spreadsheet has a tab called "Asset charts" which shows who can provide assets and who can provide assets that have been rated as usable. Again you can switch between topic areas using the drop-down in B27.
