4th Organizational Meeting #8

Update: Next meeting will be at 6:00pm on Thu, 20th June, at VPC as usual.

I unfortunately most likely won't be able to attend, but I'll try to Skype in if anything changes.

Hey everyone! Hope you can fill in the doodle poll by Wed, 12th June. We have 3 tie-breakers for Tue, Wed, Thu (18, 19, 20), so even one more vote will help settle dates more easily!

It's looking like the TL application deadline might have to be extended. 3/9 applications are local. I believe several of the organizers, including myself, are planning on submitting applications, but that likely won't be enough to get to the number of teams we need.

@arisgrout what do you think? Perhaps we should organize another advertising push with the announcement of a deadline extension.

+1, I'd like to submit but I'm working with faculty at SFU to convince them to be thought leaders, takes a bit of time

So in addition to the current apps we have, we also are expecting:

In any case, we had planned to extend the deadline by some weeks when we first had our first launch. I think one agenda item for this week should be what to do with all the non-local TL applicants

@baraaorabi that's right, I already applied, wondering if my application is there? I do need to change the data source though, others will remain the same, do I need to put in a new app?

Your previous application if you wanna reuse some of its parts:

- What is the title of your proposed project? *
Data anatomy

- Provide a comma-delimited list of keywords for your project. (e.g. Metagenomics, machine learning, SNV) *
machine learning, RStudio, data visualization, data analysis, scientific inquiry

- Please provide an abstract of your proposed research project for hackseq (300 words maximum). 
Potential participants will rank their interest in your project based on this abstract. *
As a team, we will work on an open data project using Github and RStudio. The dataset we will work on provides patient reviews on specific drugs along with related conditions and a 10 star patient rating reflecting overall patient satisfaction. The data we will work on has been obtained by crawling online pharmaceutical review sites. The intention of this study is to (1) sentiment analysis of drug experience over multiple facets, i.e. sentiments learned on specific aspects such as effectiveness and side effects,  (2) the transferability of models among domains, i.e. conditions, and  (3) the transferability of models among different data sources.  The data is split into a train (75%) a test (25%) partition and stored in two .tsv (tab-separated-values) files, respectively. We will be using machine learning to make prediction models based on the data. Through participation, students and trainees will get hands-on experience on solving problems with data analysis; new skills and experience with interdisciplinary teamwork; chance to network with people from different fields; as well as advice from experienced mentors.

Hey @hackseq/hs19_organizers! Just a reminder that we are meeting today at 6pm. I will be waiting on the Laurel street side of Vancouver Prostate Centre (2635 Laurel St) 5-10 minutes before 6. If you can't make it in person but wanna Skype in then let me know!
