it's not even possible to get the software.
i think the best approach is to grab the combinatorial designs book from the library and then just build a general-purpose 'matrix visualisation' thing, maybe?
or at least, that's one step.
another idea - could some of the combinatorial designs be used to generate drumbeats and baselines? related to #6

there doesn't seem to be much out there on this at the moment.
there's this - http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/VISUAL.1994.346323 but it's quite old, and a very quick glance at the paper suggests it's not that nice.
