wubi crashed on bay trail tablet... #14

i installed ubuntu16.04 on bay trail tablet,but wubi's window was suddenly closed.

If there is an issue during the Windows part of the installation, a log file contains further information. You find the log file in the Windows temp folder. A shortcut for the Windows temp folder is %temp% . The path name for the log file is %temp%\wubi-16.04.1-rev310.log if you use wubi16041r310.exe. The full path name is something like C:\Users\YourWindowsName\AppData\Local\Temp\wubi-16.04.1-rev310.log. Can you add some information of that log that we can analyze your issue ?

Wubi tried to list the content of the downloaded ISO file with the following Windows command:

C:\Users\keity\AppData\Local\Temp\pyl45FF.tmp\bin\7z.exe l C:\ubuntu2\install\ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64.iso

But an error occured:

UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0x83 in position 123: ordinal not in range(128)

It looks like that Windows command shell doesn't use the same character table as the Python program Wubi.

After that error Wubi tried to delete the downloaded ISO file and to download the ISO file again. That also failed:

Process cannot access the file. It is being used by another process.

But IMHO it is not necessary to download the ISO again. You can copy the file C:\ubuntu2\install\ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64.iso to the same folder where you run your wubi.exe. So Wubi should not download it again.

Meanwhile I'll try to fix the conversion issue of different character tables.

I have same problem Wubi fot Ubuntu16.04 on Bay-Trail 「Z3735F」Tablet too. But there is no problem with the Legacy BIOS model 「Acer Iconia W500S」. I think the difference is UEFI 32bit devices? Grub2 bootloader? Mounting GPT stroage files?

This is another issue similar to #11 . It should work, if you run "Demo mode" ( see here ). Then you can use an installation script (see here ) if you use a Wubi version which installs in folder ubuntu.

But your log was from a version which installs in folder ubuntu2. Is there a reason why you used this version ?

If there is no existing and working installation in folder ubuntu, it makes no sense to use the version for the second install. But I can modify the installation script for ubuntu2 if needed.

Some information to the first issue:

I found similar issues for 14.04 in the past after the download site had been changed to 14.04.1. A few days ago the download site for 16.04 was updated to 16.04.1 .....

So it is better to use the Wubi version for 16.04.1 to avoid download errors. Download errors create a second download task and I assume that a bad task management causes the 7z error. IMHO the 7z output is always in English but other Windows error messages are not. But Wubi tries to log all error messages....

I assumed that. But it is interesting for me that you use wubi1604r310-2.exe and not wubi1604r310.exe as I expected in your case.

Meanwhile I changed the installation script that you can use it for a 2nd install in folder ubuntu2, too. Here is the new version. I know that it is only a quick and dirty workaround.

But I'll try to find a better solution without manual workarounds in the next weeks.

Good news. IMHO I found at least one reason why automatic installation on tablets with eMMC storage fails. The reason is the linux device name. I'll try to fix it as soon as possible.

Can you try a simple manual workaround to confirm my assumption? My problem is that I have no tablet which is affected by the issue. I found the reason in a screenshot which was sent to me from an affected tablet user. But it was some months ago and I don't know if I'll get answers soon from this user.

If Wubi creates the folder ubuntu (or ubuntu2 in your case) on Windows, it also creates a configuration file. The file is used to complete installation after reboot.

The name of the file is ubuntu\install\custom-installation\preseed.cfg

There is one interesting line:

d-i partman-auto/disk string LIDISK

LIDISK is automatically replaced by the linux device name during installation. This doesn't work for eMMC devices.

So, can you manually replace LIDISK with the linux device name ? The linux device name for the first eMMC disk is /dev/mmcblk0. (0 is zero)

If you change that e.g. with Notepad, it should work with the new configuration after reboot.

For testing purpose I built a wubi for 16.04.1 with a fix for MMC devices. wubi16041r311.exe (md5sum: a77a3b32ed1750d1997bd7ffd5d96545) (*)

If it works, I'll release it in the wubiuefi repository. If not, I'll try other or additional patches.

Some additional information (not necessary to run the test, but maybe interesting):

As I described in a previous post, one issue (hopefully the only one issue) is the wrong replacement of LIDISK. For the first MMC device it is /dev/mmcblk0p (wrong) instead of /dev/mmcblk0 (right).

The reason is that other devices have partition names like /dev/sda1. If you remove trailing numbers you get the disk name e.g. /dev/sda. The partition name of MMC devices is e.g. /dev/mmcblk0p1 and if you remove trailing numbers you get /dev/mmcblk0p which is not the disk name.

So I inserted a script data/custom-installation/hooks/casper-bottom.sh which should remove the trailing p.
