I drive between 8 and 5, probably like most people, it would be nice if it
would automatically start and stop at those times and just name each log by
the date.

This is a very similar to what I suggested: automatically create a new trip for 
each 24 hour period. I track my miles daily. This would eliminate the need to 
start and stop the gps tracking.
