1.2 and 1.2.1 instantly drop outgoing calls, 1.1.8 works fine with same options (gizmo5) #221

What steps will reproduce the problem?

1. Uninstall Sipdroid 1.1.8, install 1.2 or 1.2.1.
2. Configure gizmo5 account credentials and server, allow WLAN/EDGE, 
leave everything else at default values.
3. Try to make a call -- it is instantly dropped. The call screen comes up, 
registration status dot goes from green to yellow and back to green (as 
usual), and then immediately the green call status rectangle slides down 
and becomes red, call ends. WiFi, EDGE -- same result.

Workaround: uninstall 1.2.x, install 1.1.8, configure with the same options 
-- calls work fine (WiFi, EDGE).

Which SIP server are you using? What happens with PBXes?

proxy01.sipphone.com, UDP

Which type of network are you using?

WiFi, EDGE (AT&T)

Please provide any additional information below.

You probably experienced an incompatibility with the GSM compression codec used 
by 
Sipdroid 1.2 on EDGE networks. Sipdroid 1.2.1 should again transmit 
uncompressed when 
on WiFi and call option "Voice Compression" set to "Only over EDGE".

You're absolutely right: 1.2.1 does work over WiFi with "voice compression" set 
to 
"only EDGE", over EDGE it drops the call immediately, and when I turn voice 
compression to "always enabled", it starts dropping the call even over WiFi.

Does that mean that Gizmo5 does not support the same codec?

So what exactly would we need to tell Gizmo5 to allow them to start supporting 
the 
necessary codec? Without compression, Sipdroid voice over EDGE is butchered 
beyond 
usability. Quite possibly Gizmo5 might already support some other codec which 
Sipdroid 
could start supporting. As a third party to all this, I don't feel I am in a 
good 
position to own this conversation. It would be good if one of Sipdroid 
developers, 
esp. if someone has a Gizmo5 account, could get in touch with them and discuss 
it.

I have the same problme here. G1 with a Cyanogen donut mod.
So what exactly is this codecs? Is it widely supported? If not, any 
alternatives?
My suggestions is if there are no alternatives, at least provide an option to 
turn
off the compression feature. Sad but at least usable.

If you install Sipdroid 1.1.8 (dig for it in the downloads), it has no 
compression and 
will work over EDGE with Gizmo5 if you want it so much. BTW I suggest to 
uninstall 
1.2.x first when downgrading to a lower build (to avoid having prefs newer than 
the 
app) -- as with any other app, but it might work properly even without an 
explicit 
uninstall.

In my experience though, uncompressed voice over EDGE (i.e. in Sipdroid 1.1.8) 
is 
basically unusable even with full reception (AT&T US, G1 Donut Cyanogen), so 
IMHO 
it's really a moot question whether to re-enable it in Sipdroid 1.2.x...

P.S. I am not a Sipdroid developer, just a user. YMMV.

Does anyone have this issue as I do " when calling using sipdroid calls the 
other 
number and as soon as it is answer it disconnects the call

Yea I cannot use the lower bitrate codecs on Sipdroid version 1.4.4. The only 
codecs that work for me are PCMA 
and PCMU 64-bit, they work well on wifi and 3G(very slight lag) but would be 
nice to see how the other codecs 
work. When trying to use Silk, Speex or BV16 I either get codec incompatible 
error or the call immediately 
disconnects. I am using a Nexus One on ATT 3G with Google Voice > Sipgate > 
Sipsorcery > Sipdroid.

The codecs SILK8, BV, speex and G722 work well between Sipdroids phone. SILK16 
and
SILK24 have codec incompatibility error, although FreeSwitch supports them, call
cannot be established.

The earliest version currently listed is 1.2.4.

Instead of downloading 1.1.8 you can simply enable PCMA/PCMU on all networks in 
"Audio 
Codecs".

Same problem here, calls are dropped instantly when initiated from my Nexus, 
however, when I initiate the call from Google Voice on my PC, everything works 
perfectly. I am using this with sipgate and sipsorcery.

Calls are dropped instantly from Desire HD.
App work fine for some time, then suddenly call is made, but there is silence 
for both sides. After this any sipdroid call is dropped immediately until 
device is rebooted. After reboot it works fine for a while...
