Design Aesthetic Brainstorm #34

Open scootyboots opened 4 years ago

scootyboots commented 4 years ago

@aburd Thought we could brainstorm some ideas for a design aesthetic for hangzone.

I have a feeling like it should be kinda tacky, like knowingly tacky? I think making it too slick and clean is not in the spirit of the hang.

We're coming up on the 30-year nostalgia cycle for the 90s so that's somewhere to start. Black/Pink/Neon-green, lots of zig-zags that kinda deal.

@aburd I'm totally down to get Vish in on this two, he seems really excited to work on something

aburd commented 4 years ago

@scootyboots I'm going to message Vish, see if he wants in.

I agree. It's gotta have our own style. Gotta express the "spirit of the hang" as you say. I feel like we should get together at some point. Maybe hangzone and draw stuff? Or maybe post up some drawings or something.

@vishthedish let us know if you've got any ideas or what you might need to know from us to help fill in the gaps

@scootyboots @aburd What's up guys, thanks for inviting me in on this - psyched to help out wherever I can!

I really love the idea of keeping the aesthetic knowingly tacky (I also initially had neons and blacks in mind!) - though it's a pretty fine line between that and unappealingly tacky, so need to be a little careful balancing it out imo.

I feel like if we were to go in that direction, we might still need like a solid, conventional, modern base style (so as to keep some sense of familiarity), and build the "tackiness" on top of that. Even I don't really know what kind of shape that's going to take lol, but I'm going to mock up some stuff over the weekend to share with you guys.

Since there aren't many modern examples of this kind of style, what would help is if we could all collaborate on a mood board of sorts. Like we all just dump links/images/videos to the kind of aesthetic that we want to build out. Could just share stuff below in this issue thread?

What do you reckon?

This

Can you think of any other projects that have done this successfully? And even saying "tacky" doesn't necessarily get at a specific aesthetic...if we even want to go for one. And maybe just to suss out a little more about where we should go in designing it, perhaps it would be useful to start thinking about the design in terms of characteristics.

Here are a few examples:

Although I did just kind of make this shit up, all this is to say, perhaps we should be thinking about Hangzone in terms of UI/UX/Novelty or other design terms to see where we want our design to fall on some sort of scale. You can't really have everything, but if we can balance these characteristics, we can at least have a direction and make sacrifices where we need to.

TicToc, at least the logo, definitely comes to mind for me.

I really like white dot pattern in here - feel like that could be used in a variety of situations, also the abstract color splashes look pretty sick

aburd commented 4 years ago

@scootyboots Apparently that is called Stippling.

@aburd @scootyboots

I know it's been like 2 months (sorry about that) - but I've finally got something to show you! It's not much, but it could be at least something to use as a starting point.

@vishthedish

Wooooow this is sick man! Thanks for putting this together, definitely a lot to work with here.

I've added some comments to the figma.

Overall I think this is definitely the direction and feel that we're looking for, but it's a little bit on the conservative side.

I've made a "variations" page on the figma to try out some alternative secondary colors as well as different button styles. I don't think the stuff in there is exactly what we want either, but maybe if we can find somewhere in the middle we'll hit the sweet spot.

vishthedish commented 3 years ago

@scootyboots

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions! Seriously liked the variations you put in there - I'll try to see if there's a way to work with these ideas to create something more solid.

Also I'll try to figure out some good font pairings and update the Figma link with some options soon 👍

Regarding font pairings, I just found this super helpful site which keeps randomly generating combinations (which you can lock in and out as you go) - for example I tried it for a few minutes and thought this was a set that could work:

Woooow super cool, definitely bookmarking this

aburd commented 3 years ago

So I'm ressssssurecting this project and the only thing I have to suggest on the design side is use figma. I'm also thinking other than that, all the docs can just go inside of Github wiki etc for now.

aburd commented 2 years ago

Oh snap, thanks @josephdburdick I have no idea why this didn't popup in my notifications.
