It looks like nano is actively maintained, and even has syntax files for modern languages like go: https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/nano.git/tree/syntax

Given that currently it erroneously recognizes perl 6 code as perl5, maybe it wouldn't be a problem to contribute another syntax file.
